Warriors open spring season at Taylor Invitational

Team improves score by 28 strokes from round one

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's golf team opened its spring season of competition by placing eighth at the Taylor University Invitational which wrapped up Tuesday at Purdue University's Kampen Golf Course.

The Warriors, who carded a team stroke total of 358 during Monday's opening round, improved upon their score in the second round on Tuesday by shooting a 330. Following a round of 87 on Monday, senior Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) turned around Tuesday to fire a team-low score of 77 and finish tied for 29th out of 48 players with a 164. Sophomore Caleb Pearson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Luther Preparatory) also tied Madson with a 164 after shooting consecutive rounds of 83 and 81.

Senior Ryan Mraz (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) had the team's most drastic improvement. After shooting a 94 in the first round, Mraz fired an 82 in the second round to finish with a 176. Sophomore Henry Tews (Campbellsport, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) finished with a 184 after turning in rounds of 94 and 90.

WLC concluded its first meet of the spring season by shooting a 688 (358, 330).

The team from Huntington University shot consecutive round scores of 318 and 293 for a total of 611 to win the team crown by four strokes over runner-up Wheaton College (611). After firing an 80 in Monday's first round, Huntington’s Cory Powell came back to shoot a tournament-low round of 69 on Tuesday to earn medalist honors and finish at 5-over (149) on the par-72 course.

Wisconsin Lutheran returns to the links next week, April 19-20, for the NAC AQ Meet at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Ill.
