MILWAUKEE - Benedictine's Tim McGinty scored a game-high 29 points on 9-for-13 shooting to lead Benedictine past the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team 77-61 Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Complex.
The first half featured four lead changes as the Warriors (5-12, 3-10 NACC) pulled out to their biggest lead at 22-14 with 9:20 remaining in the opening frame. The Eagles (8-10, 6-7 NACC) responded with a 14-0 run to grab a lead they would never relinquish at 28-22 with 4:32 to go in the half. BenU led 35-32 at halftime.
The Eagles hit 45.8 percent of their shots in the opening half and the Warriors connected on 44.4 percent. WLC held a 16-10 advantage in points in the paint. Jake Jarnigo (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) led the Warriors with seven points in the half.
BenU made a series of runs in the second half in which they out-scored WLC 42-29. The Eagles started the half on a 16-2 run -- capped by a three-pointer from Alex Edmonson -- that pushed the lead to 51-37 with 13:26 left in the game. WLC used a 9-3 run to trim the lead to 54-46 on a jumper by Christian Walz (Waukesha, Wis./West) with 9:43 remaining in the game. The Warriors never got closer than that as the Eagles closed out the game by making 18-for-20 at the foul line in the second half. The Eagles also were 6-for-10 from three-point range in the closing stanza.
McGinty was 5-for-5 from long distance and 6-for-6 at the line while leading BenU with nine rebounds. Edmonson was 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and scored 15.
DJ Escamilla (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) led the Warriors with 11 points while Taylor Chladek (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) and Kyle Stelse (Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) chipped in with 10 apiece. Brett Lubbe (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran pulled down a game-high 11 boards.
The Warriors were out-shot 41.7 percent to 37.3 percent and out-rebounded 38-36. Benedictine hit 48.0 percent (12-for-25) from downtown. WLC out-scored BenU 24-16 in the paint.
