WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's golf team shot a 303 and out-lasted Edgewood in a tiebreaker playoff to win the 10-team WLC Spring Invitational Saturday at Morningstar Golfer's Club. It was the Warriors' first tournament win since they won the St. Norbert Invitational in their final spring meet a year ago.
Pete Kaufmann (Davenport, Iowa/Central) tied for third overall in the 59-player field to lead the Warriors with a 73 (+1). Jacob Mortell (Eden Prairie, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) was fifth, just one shot behind Kaufmann, with a 74. Sean Esenberg (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Jake Gaudynski (New Berlin, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) carded rounds of 77 and 79, respectively. Danny Frawley (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) rounded out the team scoring with an 87. The Warriors' 303 (+15) was their third-lowest round of the season.
WLC's second team was paced by Gordon Tews (Campbellsport, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran), who tied for 17th with Gaudynski with a 79. Tyler Hallmann (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), Tyler Wood (Eagan, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran), and Dan Leiberis (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) tallied rounds of 80, 81, and 82, respectively. Garrett Ralston (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) turned in an 85.
Individually for the Warriors, Sam Gostchock (Fridley, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) and TJ Obbink (Cedar Grove, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) finished one stroke apart with an 83 and 84, respectively. Brett Morris (Burlington, Wis./Catholic Central) shot an 87 and Matt Kuzniar (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) recorded a 91 to complete the scoring for Wisconsin Lutheran.
Lakeland's Kellen Syse earned medalist honors with his one-round 70 (-2).
The Warriors will next play in the third and fourth rounds of the NACC Championship April 21-22 at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Ill. WLC currently sits in third among 10 teams after its two-round 650 (324-326) at the Whistling Straits Irish Course during the fall's first two rounds.
