PINEHURST, N.C. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's golf team fired a three-round 972 to finish ahead of two NCAA Division I teams this weekend at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate played at historic Pinehurst Resort. The Warriors placed ahead of Morehead State and Loyola-Chicago in the 11-team field.
Sean Esenberg (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Jacob Mortell (Eden Prairie, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) each recorded top-30 finishes in the mostly Division I 65-player field. Esenberg was 25th with a 236 (83-75-78) and Mortell was 27th with a 238 (75-80-83).
Pete Kaufmann (Davenport, Iowa/Central) tied with three other players for 53rd with a 250 (93-80-77). Danny Frawley's (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) 257, Tyler Wood's (Eagan, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) 258, and Jake Gaudynski's (New Berlin, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) 265 rounded out the team scoring for Wisconsin Lutheran.
The Warriors' three-round 972 included a second-round 314, the sixth lowest round of the day. Belmont combined for a 900 (297-301-302) to win the team title, finishing 18 strokes in front of second-place Marshall. Belmont's Ashton Van Horne took home medalist honors with his three-round 214 (69-72-73).
