WAUWATOSA, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's tennis team played two matches Monday, falling 9-0 at home to Lawrence followed by a 9-0 defeat at Beloit.
The Warriors trailed 3-0 following doubles play in the morning match against the Vikings. In singles play, the No. 1 slot featured a tight first set as Warriors sophomore Kendall Bonnin (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph) battled Lawrence's Gayatari Malhotra, who won the set 6-4. Malhotra followed by winning the second set 6-1 to win the match.
The No. 3 singles match featured sophomore Kalyn Geddes (Bend, Ore./Luther Preparatory) who was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by LU's Melissa Heeren.
The Vikings swept the remaining singles matches to finish off the 9-0 victory.
In the afternoon, WLC traveled to Beloit, dropping the match despite some hard-fought matches. Doubles play featured a tiebreaker, as the Warriors duo of Petra Krause (Oshkosh, Wis./West) and Susanna Harbach (Nodine, Minn./Luther) were tied at eight games apiece with Beloit's Alex Hinck and Maria Mears. The Buccaneers squeaked out the tiebreaker 9-7 to take the match.
The WLC duo of freshman Emily Leistekow (La Crosse, Wis./Luther Preparatory) and sophomore Bethany Soderlund (De Pere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) fell 8-5 in its doubles contest against Alexandra Kurpiel and Samantha Kinard.
Soderlund's match at No. 5 singles included a close 7-5 loss in the first set to Beloit's Paola Schnabel before Schnabel took the second set 6-2.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-3) will play its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. at MSOE (1-1).
