MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College, led by
senior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran), defeated
the NAC South-leading Dominican University Stars 87-69 on Saturday
afternoon at the Recreation Complex.
The Warriors scored 24 points in the paint to take a slim lead
into halftime, 39-36. Both teams led by as many as four points
early on in the first half. Wisconsin Lutheran shot 47.1 percent
(16-for-34) compared to 41.9 percent (13-for-31) for Dominican. The
Warriors out-rebounded the Stars 20-15, which led to a 9-2
advantage in second chance points. Both teams committed just six
turnovers in the opening period. The Warriors were led Laete's 14
points and five rebounds in the period. The Stars were led by
junior Kayla Blom with 13 points and four rebounds.
WLC, whose largest lead in the game was also the final margin of
victory, gradually pulled away in the second half. The Warriors
never trailed in the half, shooting a scorching 73.9 percent
(17-for-23) compared to 46.7 percent (14-for-30) for the
Stars.
Laete had a career-high day scoring 32 points on 15-for-20 from
the field. She also grabbed seven rebounds and recorded three
assists. Junior Jenna Neuberger (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
tied her career high totals in points and rebounds with 16 and six,
respectively, including 6-for-6 from the charity stripe . Junior
Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added 15 points
and 11 rebounds to record a double-double for the Warriors. Johnson
was perfect from the free throw line making all seven of her
attempts.
Wisconsin Lutheran shot 57.9 percent (33-for-57) for the game,
including 44.4 percent (4-for-9) from beyond the three-point line.
The Warriors also shot 89.5 percent (17-for-19) from the free throw
line. WLC scored over half of its points in the paint, 44.
Blom finished with 27 points to lead the Stars (13-4, 8-2 NAC),
who shot 44.3 percent (27-for-61) from the floor in the contest,
including 33.3 percent (9-for-27) from beyond the arc. DU's Ashley
Oliver also reached double figures with 10 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran (13-3, 8-2 NAC) travels to Marian University
(10-7, 5-7 NAC) in Fond du Lac, Wis., on Tuesday for a 7 p.m.
tip-off at Sadoff Gymnasium. The Warriors defeated the Sabers 82-47
in their first meeting of the season on December 20 at the
Recreation Complex.
