Women’s Basketball Suffers First Home Loss To UW-Platteville

Warriors held to lowest shooting percentage of the season

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – No. 23 Wisconsin Lutheran College suffered its first home loss of the season on Saturday, falling 63-57 to UW-Platteville in a non-conference matchup at Time of Grace Center.

The Pioneers (8-1) jumped out to an early 9-2 lead four minutes into the first quarter. UWP, which made four three-pointers in the opening frame, led by as many as eight points before carrying an 18-12 advantage into the second period.

The Warriors (6-2) trailed by eight points at 22-14 three minutes into the second quarter, but responded late in the quarter with their best stretch of the night. WLC closed out the half with a 7-0 spurt to take its first lead of the game following a three-pointer from freshman Maddie Ratzow (Oconomowoc, Wis.) for a 30-28 advantage at halftime.

Momentum swung back to UW-Platteville in the third quarter. After Wisconsin Lutheran extended its lead to a game-high nine points four minutes in the period, the Pioneers answered with a decisive 14-2 run to regain control. UWP edged the Warriors 15-10 in the quarter to take a 43-40 lead into the final 10 minutes.
The fourth quarter remained tight throughout, as WLC cut its deficit to two points twice multiple times, but UW-Platteville closed out the game at the free-throw line by going 5-for-5 to secure the 63-57 win.

Wisconsin Lutheran shot a season-low 30.5 percent (18-for-59) from the field in the loss. Sophomore Abby Cole (Fond du Lac, Wis.) led the Warriors with 13 points and also paced the team on the glass with eight rebounds. Junior Margie Stevens (Oneida, Wis.) also scored 13 points. Freshman Kenly Frey (Brookfield, Wis.) finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, and three steals, and senior Jayden Hill (Kenosha, Wis.) tallied 10 points and five rebounds.

UW-Platteville finished the game shooting 41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the floor. Ashley Weir led the Pioneers with 10 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Alexis Strom also chipped in 10 points.

The Warriors return to action on Saturday, December 20, for a non-conference matchup against NCAA Division I Milwaukee (2-9) at 12 p.m. at the Klotsche Center. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
