A native of Slinger, Wagner enjoyed a four-year collegiate pitching career at Milwaukee Area Technical College and the University of Missouri–St. Louis. He pitched from 2020-2024, competing at both the NJCAA and NCAA Division II levels. During his junior college career, Wagner posted an 8-4 record with a 3.70 ERA, striking out 71 batters in 70 innings. He finished 16th nationally in Division III junior college ERA during the 2021 season.

Wagner earned an associate degree in Journalism from Milwaukee Area Technical College before completing his bachelor’s degree in Sports Management at UMSL in 2025.

Baseball runs deep in Wagner’s family, as his uncle, Paul Wagner, pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cleveland Guardians.
