MILWAUKEE - Plagued by six turnovers, the
Wisconsin Lutheran College football team suffered a 26-7 loss to
the Lakeland College Muskies on Saturday afternoon in a Northern
Athletics Conference game at Raabe Stadium.
Wisconsin Lutheran controlled time of possession, had more first
downs and ran 16 more offensive plays than Lakeland, but in the end
it was turnovers that cost the Warriors.
Each team possessed the football twice in the opening quarter,
but neither was able to come away with any points and the game
remained scoreless after one quarter.
After Wisconsin Lutheran punted the football on its first
possession of the second quarter, sophomore linebacker Brad
Marshall (Cudahy, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) intercepted Jake
Dworak's pass two plays later and returned it 20 yards for a
touchdown to give WLC a 7-0 lead with 13:37 left before
halftime.
WLC stopped Lakeland on downs on its next possession, but
turnovers hurt the Warriors chances of putting points on the board
the rest of the game.
Sophomore quarterback Josh McCormick (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) threw interceptions on three consecutive
possessions and the Muskies capitalized by converting two of those
turnovers into touchdowns to take a 14-7 halftime lead.
Lakeland scored the only points of the third quarter on a
50-yard touchdown pass to Jake Heinemeyer midway through the period
to give LC a 20-7 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Offense was tough to come by for each team in the final period
as they exchanged fumbles to begin the quarter and neither team was
able to capitalize. The Muskies closed the door on the Warriors
when Keith Woodson returned an interception 70 yards for a
touchdown with just over four minutes left to seal the win for the
visitors.
Wisconsin Lutheran compiled 324 yards of total offense, compared
to 384 yards for the Muskies. Three players rushed for over 60
yards in the game for WLC, which piled up 214 yards on the
ground.
Freshman Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
rushed for 82 yards on 11 carries and Ryan Adamovich (Kaukauna,
Wis./Kaukauna) caught four passes for 35 yards to lead the Warriors
offensively. Sophomore linebacker Nate Rosenberg (Hortonville,
Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) finished with a team-high 6.5 tackles,
three for a loss, and 1.5 sacks to guide the defense.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-3, 1-1 NAC) hosts Rockford College next
Saturday in a 1 p.m. kickoff at Raabe Stadium.
