MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
football team put together a strong defensive effort to defeat the
Rockford College Regents 18-7 in a Northern Athletics Conference
game on Saturday afternoon at Raabe Stadium.
The victory gave ninth-year head coach (21st overall) Dennis
Miller his 100th career coaching win.
Wisconsin Lutheran got on the scoreboard first with 2:54 left in
the first quarter when sophomore quarterback Josh McCormick (Fond
du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) snuck across the goal line from
one yard out. Junior Ryan Adamovich (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna)
converted a botched extra point attempt into two points to give WLC
an 8-0 lead.
Rockford countered with a touchdown at the 4:58 mark of the
second quarter to cut the lead to 8-7. The Warriors answered on
their ensuing possession when Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) scored on an eight-yard touchdown run to
send WLC into the locker room in front 15-7.
The Warriors took the opening kickoff of the second half and
drove down to the Regents 13-yard line. Junior kicker Heikki Luoma
(Helsinki Finland) accounted for the only points of the second half
when he connected on a 30-yard field goal try with 12:07 remaining
in the third quarter for an 18-7 advantage.
WLC, which intercepted Rockford quarterback Mike Sosnowski three
times in the fourth quarter, forced a total of six turnovers on the
afternoon to help preserve the victory. Sophomore linebacker Nate
Rosenberg (Hortonville, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) finished with a
game-high 9.5 tackles, while freshman linebacker Tim Wermeling
(Burlington, Wis./Burlington) had nine tackles and one
interception. Sophomore Colin Makepeace (Cape Canaveral, Fla./Cocoa
Beach) picked off two passes.
Offensively, Muldrow finished with 57 yards rushing on 14
carries. McCormick completed seven of 21 pass attempts for 116
yards, while Dominique Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent) caught
five passes for 78 yards as the Warriors finished with 235 yards of
total offense.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-3, 2-1 NAC) makes the short drive north to
Mequon, Wis., next Saturday to take on NAC foe Concordia University
Wisconsin. Kickoff between the Warriors and Falcons is slated for 1
p.m. at Century Stadium.
