ROCKFORD, Ill. - Matt Birschbach (Waukesha,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) scored two goals and Trevor Schwartz (Lake
Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) added two assists to lead the
Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team past Rockford College
4-0 on Tuesday in the final game of the 2008 season for both
teams.
Birschbach found the back of the net just 59 seconds into the
match on a pass from Schwartz to put Wisconsin Lutheran up 1-0. The
match remained 1-0 in favor of the Warriors until intermission.
WLC extended its lead to 2-0 when Ryan Powalisz (Milwaukee,
Wis./Heritage Christian) scored unassisted at 48:17. Schwartz
hooked up with Birschbach a second time at the 68:57 mark to lift
the Warriors to a 3-0 advantage.
In his final collegiate game, senior Edgar Albarran (Kenosha,
Wis./Bradford) tallied WLC's last goal of the night off an assist
from freshman James Sather (Milwaukee, Wis./Nathan Hale) for the
final 4-0 margin.
The Warriors out-shot the Regents (1-13, 1-10 NAC) 14-11 in the
contest, which saw 43 fouls and eight cards, seven against
Rockford, issued in the match. Matt Eisold (Burlington,
Wis./Burlington) and Chris Lorig (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran)
combined for the shutout with six saves.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which finishes its 2008 season 6-11 overall
and 4-7 in conference play, fails to qualify for the NAC Tournament
for the first time since the league was formed in 2006.
