AURORA, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team was out-rebounded 31-16 on the offensive
glass by host Aurora University as the Spartans topped the Warriors
88-85 in overtime on Thursday in a matchup of the two top teams in
the NAC at the Thornton Gymnasium.
Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) scored a
career-high 22 points to lead three players in double figures for
Wisconsin Lutheran. Marcus Zondag (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) and
Kyle Plath (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) added 17 apiece.
Zondag also had 11 rebounds.
The Warriors held one first half lead, 5-2, before trailing by
as many as 11 points in the half. WLC managed to cut the deficit to
four points (38-34) at the half.
Wisconsin Lutheran grabbed its first lead of the second half,
which featured six lead changes, (46-44) at the 16:11 mark. AU
answered with eight straight points for a six-point lead. WLC
trailed 77-74 with 54 seconds remaining in regulation when Plath
hit a three to tie the game and eventually send it into
overtime.
WLC scored the first bucket of overtime as the teams exchanged
leads eight times during the five-minute session. The Warriors shot
just 20 percent (2-10), while the Spartans shot 50 percent (4-8) in
overtime.
Both teams finished the game shooting 36 percent from the floor
as Wisconsin Lutheran made 14 three-pointers.
Doug Lambert and Mike Leonard each recorded double-doubles for
Aurora (18-5, 14-2 NAC), who had four players finish in double
digits. Lambert led all scorers with 23 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran (16-6, 10-5 NAC), which plays its final three
regular season games at home, hosts the MSOE Raiders on Saturday at
7:15 p.m. at the Recreation Complex.
