Second-half surge sends Warriors past Spartans

MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College overcame a seven-point halftime deficit by shooting 60 percent from the floor in the second half to defeat the Aurora University Spartans 83-76 on Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Conference clash at the Recreation Complex.

Wisconsin Lutheran jumped in front of the Spartans 17-6 at the 10:32 mark of the first half. Aurora responded with an 18-0 run and made eight consecutive three-point field goals to take a 30-22 lead with 5:08 to play in the half. The Spartans, who shot 51.6 percent in the first half, carried a 40-33 advantage into halftime.

The Warriors opened the second half on an 11-2 run to tie the score at 44-44. Junior guard Jeremy Burmeister (Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) hit a three-pointer with 14:11 left to put WLC up 49-47, a lead it would never relinquish. The Warriors led by a game-high 13 points (75-62) with 5:47 remaining.

Aurora was able to cut the deficit down to four points, but WLC made six of its final seven free-throw attempts to collect its third straight win. WLC shot 52.9 percent (9-for-17) from beyond the arc in the half and made 11-of-13 free-throw attempts.

Senior Kyle Plath (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) poured in 25 points to lead all scorers. He connected on seven three-point field goals and scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half. Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) finished with 17 points, while Burmeister and Ben Ziesemer (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) each added 10 points. Madson and Sam Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) each grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Wisconsin Lutheran shot 53.8 percent (28-for-52) from the floor for the game, compared to Aurora's 43.8 percent (28-for-64) shooting in the contest.

Chad Trudo and Kari Coleman each scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures for Aurora (9-10, 7-4 NAC). Skyler Ormsbee added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Wisconsin Lutheran (10-8, 6-4 NAC) travels to Lakeland College in Sheboygan Saturday for a NAC showdown with the Muskies. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
