SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College football team suffered its first conference loss on
Saturday when it fell to the Lakeland College Muskies 14-9 in a
Northern Athletics Conference battle at Taylor Memorial Field.
For the second straight game, the Warriors and their opponents
played through a scoreless opening quarter of action. After
blocking a punt on WLC's opening drive, Lakeland marched down to
the Warriors' 14-yard line, but the defense stiffened forcing a
turnover on downs.
The Muskies converted a 10-play, 86-yard drive into a Jeremy
Williams two-yard touchdown run with 2:24 left before halftime to
take a 7-0 lead. The score stood that way at the half.
Lakeland returned the opening second-half kickoff down to the
WLC 31-yard line, but the Warriors' defense held again, limiting
the Muskies to just one yard on their possession. Wisconsin
Lutheran capitalized on the turnover on downs, moving the football
all the way down to Lakeland's two-yard line. After quarterback
Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) was sacked for a loss on
third-and-goal from the five, kicker Philip Chaltis (Bradenton,
Fla./Manatee) drilled a 35-yard field goal to trim WLC's deficit to
7-3.
The Muskies scored on their ensuing possession, taking the ball
60 yards in seven plays capped off by a quarterback Jake Dworak
one-yard touchdown run. LC held a 14-3 lead after three quarters of
play.
The Warriors trimmed their deficit again on their first
possession of the final quarter when Shaw found senior wide
receiver Ryan Adamovich (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) from 15 yards out
on a fourth-and-one play. WLC's two-point conversion attempt failed
and the score stood a 14-9 in favor of the Muskies.
WLC had two more possessions to work with in the final 13:37 of
the game, but could not score. The Warriors had a 60-yard touchdown
pass play nullified due to a holding call with over six minutes
left on their final possession.
The Muskies used an 11-play, 46-yard drive to run the final 6:32
off of the clock and hold on for the win.
Offensively, Shaw finished 13-for-25 for 119 yards and one
touchdown for the Warriors. Junior Larry Hairl (Chicago,
Ill./Clemente) rushed for 60 yards on 17 attempts, while Adamovich
caught three passes for 45 yards, both team highs, and a score.
Sophomore linebacker Tim Wermeling (Burlington, Wis./Burlington)
tied for a game-high nine tackles to lead the defense.
The Muskies (2-3, 2-0 NAC) were led by Dworak's 227 passing
yards on 17 of 27 pass completions. Williams rushed for a game-high
98 yards on 23 carries and Eric Zuelsdorf added four receptions for
100 yards.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-3, 1-1 NAC) remains on the road next
Saturday when it travels to Rockford Ill., for a NAC matchup versus
the Rockford Regents. Kickoff between WLC and RC is scheduled for 1
p.m. at Sam Greeley Field.
