MEQUON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran men's
soccer team played to its third tie of the season on Saturday
afternoon after ending in a 1-1 double overtime draw with Northern
Athletics Conference rival Concordia University Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-11-3, 1-7-2 NAC) and Concordia Wisconsin
(11-3-4, 7-1-2) played through a scoreless first 45 minutes to
enter halftime even at 0-0. The Warriors attempted one shot in the
opening period, while the Falcons had seven attempts.
WLC grabbed a 1-0 lead with just over six minutes gone by into
the second half of action when sophomore Trevor Schwartz (Lake
Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) connected on a penalty kick at
51:19 to propel the Warriors in front.
The Warriors held onto their slim lead up until the 84th minute
when CUW's Thomas Anderson evened the game at one apiece after
countering with his own penalty kick. The match remained knotted at
1-1 through the next six minutes and again after a pair of
10-minute overtime periods.
Matt Birschbach (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) recorded a
team-high three shots for the Warriors. Schwartz added WLC's other
shot on the penalty kick. Matt Eisold (Burlington, Wis./Burlington)
amassed 10 saves in the net to preserve the tie.
Enrique Alvarado collected a game-high five of Concordia's 24
shots. Thomas Anderson made two saves.
Wisconsin Lutheran wraps up its 2009 season on Tuesday when it
hosts Concordia University Chicago in a 7 p.m. NAC contest at
Warrior Field. Seniors Matt Eisold, Ryan Powalisz (Milwaukee,
Wis./Heritage Christian) and Alex Vogel (Jackson, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) will be honored prior to the start of the
match.
