MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team was outscored 24-5 at the free throw line
as it fell to Ripon College 79-69 on Saturday afternoon in the
consolation game of the Dunn's Sporting Goods Tip-Off Tournament at
the Recreation Complex.
The Warriors started quick by making their first four shots to
grab an early 9-5 lead. The Red Hawks answered with a 9-0 run and
would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.
Ripon led by a game-high 18 points with 2:03 remaining in the
first half until freshman guard Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope
School) capped a 10-2 Warriors run with a coast-to-coast lay-up to
trim the visitors lead to 10 points (43-33) as the first-half clock
expired. WLC shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the first half,
while Ripon countered with 62.5 percent. Ripon also made 9 of 12
free throws, while the Warriors attempted just two in the
half.
Junior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) and
senior Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
each scored 11 points in the second half in the comeback effort.
WLC came within five points (69-64) with 2:42 left in the game on a
lay-up from Miller, but that was as close as they would get. Ripon
finished the game shooting 24-for-36 from the free throw line,
while WLC was 5-for-8 from the charity stripe.
For the game, Wisconsin Lutheran finished shooting 45.2 percent
(28-for-62), while Ripon shot 55.6 percent (25-for-45).
Miller led the Warriors with 23 points and nine rebounds. Dillon
tallied 16 points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench. All
of Laete's 11 points came in the second half. Senior Megan Sankey
(Waupun, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) added 10 points.
Carissa Zuercher scored 20 points for Ripon (1-1), while two
other Red Hawks recorded double-doubles on the afternoon. Jessica
DeHamer scored 12 points and dished out 10 assists and Emily Meyer
recorded 10 points and chipped in with 11 rebounds.
Following the consolation game, UW-Platteville (3-0) defeated
Northland College (2-2) 67-55 in the tournament championship
game.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-2) travels to UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday
for a non-conference clash with the 23rd-ranked Pointers at 7
p.m.
