LISLE, Ill. - Wisconsin Lutheran College
suffered a tough 16-14 Northern Athletics Conference defeat to the
Benedictine University Eagles on Saturday afternoon in its final
road game of the season at the Sports Complex.
After stopping the Warriors on their first drive of the game,
the Benedictine Eagles turned a six-play, 61-yard drive into a
Derek Hitt 35-yard touchdown run to put BU in front 7-0 with 9:54
left in the first quarter. The score stayed the same through one
quarter of action.
Wisconsin Lutheran tied the contest on its second possession of
the second quarter. After starting its drive on the Eagles' 39-yard
line, sophomore running back Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) plowed to the end zone from two yards away
to knot the score at 7-7.
Kaylan Gaines (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage) sacked
Benedictine quarterback Dave Klinger on the first play of the hosts
ensuing possession and recovered the fumble at the BU 19-yard line.
WLC scored two plays later on a Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren
Township) one-yard sneak for a 14-7 lead with 5:41 left before the
half. The score remained the same until halftime.
On the Warriors' second possession of the second half,
Benedictine intercepted a Shaw pass to take over at the WLC 23-yard
line. BU punched the ball across the goal line three plays later,
but failed on the extra point try as the Warriors held a slim 14-13
lead through three quarters of action.
The Eagles turned their longest drive, 13 plays in 6:06, into a
25-yard field goal to grab a 16-14 lead with 11:08 remaining on the
fourth quarter clock. Wisconsin Lutheran was unable to move the
football into field goal range on its final two possessions of the
game for an attempt to win the game.
Benedictine converted on a fourth-and-1 on the games' final
drive and was able to run out the clock to seal the victory.
Larry Hairl (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) rushed for 56 yards to lead
WLC, which gained 160 yards of offense in the game. Dominique
Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent) caught three passes for 33 yards,
including a 71-yard kickoff return, to pace the receivers. Shaw
completed seven of 26 passing attempts for 87 yards.
Justin Cromas (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) recorded a game-high
nine tackles for the Warriors defense. Gaines added eight tackles,
all solo, four tackles for a loss, a fumble recovery and a
sack.
Derek Hitt rushed for a game-high 63 yards to guide the Eagles
(5-4, 4-2 NAC), who totaled 248 yards of offense.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-5, 3-3 NAC) caps off its 10th season of
intercollegiate football competition next Saturday, November 14, by
hosting Maranatha Baptist Bible College in a noon kickoff at Raabe
Stadium. WLC will honor seniors Ryan Adamovich (Kaukauna,
Wis./Kaukauna), Cromas, Erik Ethun (Rock Springs, Wis./Baraboo),
Cody Harms (Blair, Wis./Blair-Taylor), Heikki Luoma (Helsinki,
Finland/English School of Helsinki) and Ben Proeber (Janesville,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) during a pregame ceremony.
