MILWAUKEE - The WLC women's basketball team had
four players reach double-figure scoring on its way to defeating
Rockford College 71-58 on Saturday evening in a Northern Athletics
Conference game at the Recreation Complex.
After falling behind 4-2 with just over a minute gone by in the
game, Wisconsin Lutheran responded by going on a 10-0 run to take a
12-4 lead at the 14:27 mark. The Warriors lengthened their lead to
a first-half high 17 points (36-19) with 2:20 on the clock before
Rockford scored the half's final five points for a 36-24 halftime
lead.
Freshman guard Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School)
scored 10 of her 15 points in the opening half for WLC, which held
the Regents to just 29.2 percent shooting in the first half. The
Warriors also out-scored Rockford 19-5 in points off turnovers.
WLC began the second half with a 10-0 run and held a lead of at
least 13 points throughout the entire half. The Warriors led by a
game-high 22 points at two separate junctures before winning by 13
points to improve to 2-0 in the NAC.
Senior forward Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) scored a team-high 17 points, including 10 in the second
half, to pace the Warriors. Dillon finished with 15 points, while
junior forward Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran)
added 14 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Senior Megan Sankey
(Waupun, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) chipped in with 10 points.
The Warriors shot 45.3 percent (29-for-64) from the floor for
the game, compared to 36.4 percent (20-for-55) for the visiting
Regents. WLC forced 24 turnovers which turned into 27 points, while
Rockford turned 14 Warriors miscues into just 10 points.
Britney Curry scored 24 points to lead all scorers for the
Regents (1-6, 1-3 NAC), while Megan Lawler tallied a double-double
with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-3, 2-0 NAC) faces a pair of NAC opponents
in the midst of its first semester final exam week. The Warriors
host Concordia Chicago on Tuesday at the Recreation Complex, before
traveling to cross-town rival MSOE on Thursday. Both games are
scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m.
