MILWAUKEE - Benedictine University out-scored
Wisconsin Lutheran 16-4 in second-chance points and handed the
Warriors an 81-71 loss on Saturday night in a crucial Northern
Athletics Conference South Division men's basketball game at the
Recreation Complex.
WLC scored the first four points of the game and led by as many
as six points (13-7), its largest lead of the contest, with 3:58
gone by in the first half. The Warriors, who trailed by as much as
four points in the half, carried a 38-33 lead into the locker room
at the half. Kyle Plath (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran)
scored 13 of his team-high 17 points in the period. Benedictine
found itself trailing at the half despite shooting 52.2 percent
from the floor.
After leads were exchanged six times within the first nine
minutes of the second half, Patrick Noonan put BU up for good when
his jumper at the 11:10 mark gave the Eagles a 55-54 advantage. The
Warriors tied the game at 59-59, but just could never regain the
lead. The Eagles extended their lead to a game-high 10 points on a
pair of free throws with 13 second left. The Warriors shot just
2-for-16 from three-point range and were out-rebounded by 16 in the
second half.
Plath paced Wisconsin Lutheran with 17 points. Junior Sam
Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) and senior
Danny Behm (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) finished with 16
and 13 points, respectively for the Warriors, who have lost
consecutive game for just the third time this season.
WLC, which was out-rebounded by the Eagles 48-27, shot 41.3
percent (26-for-63) from the floor for game. The Eagles finished
the game shooting 48.4 percent (30-for-62).
Jared Bailey scored a game-high 23 points to lead three players
in double figures for Benedictine (16-7, 11-4 NAC), which won its
seventh-straight game.
It was the final regular-season home game for seniors Behm,
Plath, Aaron Kassulke (Norfolk, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) and AJ
Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove Christian). A brief ceremony was
held prior to tip-off.
Wisconsin Lutheran (13-10, 9-6 NAC) plays its final game of the
regular season on Tuesday when it travels to Concordia Chicago in
River Forest, Ill., for a 7 p.m. tip-off with the Cougars.
