Warriors use balanced attack to fend off Regents

MILWAUKEE - Five players scored in double figures to lead Wisconsin Lutheran College past Rockford College 73-60 on Tuesday in a Northern Athletics Conference Tournament quarterfinal game at the Recreation Complex.

Wisconsin Lutheran (19-7), which has won eight straight games, advances to the semifinal round where it will host fourth-seeded Aurora University (17-9) on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Complex. Aurora defeated Lakeland College 76-69 in its quarterfinal game in Aurora, Ill. The Warriors and Spartans split a pair of games during the regular season, with each team winning on its home court.

Rockford jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and led 14-11 with 14:08 left in the first half. Wisconsin Lutheran countered with a 9-0 run to take a 20-14 lead at the 11:59 mark. The Warriors led by as many as 14 points in the half before heading into the locker room with a six-point (38-32) halftime lead. WLC out-scored the Regents 16-4 in second chance points in the half.

The Warriors held the Regents to just 19.4 percent shooting in the second half and owned at least a double-digit lead for the final 10:01. WLC led by a game-high 20 points, 72-52, with 1:59 left to play. Rockford closed the game on an 8-1 run but it was too little too late for the visitors.

Senior guards Britany Lindert (Milwaukee, Wis./School of Languages) and Kristen Dillon (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) each scored 15 points to pace Wisconsin Lutheran. Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) finished with 13, while Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added 12 off the bench. Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.

WLC finished the contest shooting 42.9 percent (27-for-63) from the floor, compared to 33.3 percent (20-for-60) for the Regents. The Warriors out-rebounded Rockford 48-34 and owned a 19-9 advantage in second-chance points.

Britney Curry scored 17 points to lead Rockford (8-18). Erin Decker added 12 points off the bench.
