MILWAUKEE - The top-seeded WLC women's
basketball team was defeated by second-seeded Concordia University
Wisconsin 69-65 in overtime in front of a raucous crowd on Saturday
in the 2009 Northern Athletics Conference Women's Basketball
Tournament Championship at the Recreation Complex.
After four lead changes, Concordia Wisconsin built an
eight-point lead, 20-12, with 6:11 remaining in the half. Wisconsin
Lutheran went on a 13-3 run to take a 25-23 lead with 1:52 left.
The Falcons went back up by three points, 30-27, before freshman
Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) knocked down a
three-pointer as the first half clock expired to tie the game at
halftime.
WLC opened the second half on an 11-4 run to grab a 41-34 lead
at the 16:48 mark. The Falcons went back in front by two points,
46-44, with 10:45 remaining in regulation. WLC came back on the
attack and took a 52-48 lead with 7:16 left. CUW tied the game
three times before the Warriors had two chances to win the game
within the final 10 seconds but were unable to convert and the game
was sent to an extra period.
The Falcons, who went 9-for-11 from the free-throw line in
overtime, scored the first six points of the extra session and
never trailed. The Warriors cut their deficit down to one point,
64-63, with 1:02 to play, but CUW converted on five of its final
seven free throws to deny WLC a season sweep of the visitors from
Mequon.
Senior Kristen Dillon (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) finished her
career with a game-high 25 points for Wisconsin Lutheran. Fellow
senior guard Britany Lindert (Milwaukee, Wis./School of Languages)
was the only other Warrior to reach double figures with 15 points.
Sophomore Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) grabbed a
career-high 14 rebounds for WLC, which out-rebounded the Falcons
54-44.
WLC finished the game shooting 29.9 percent (23-for-77) from the
floor, compared to 36.4 percent (24-for-66) for Concordia
Wisconsin.
Melanie Kulibert scored 19 points to lead four players in double
figures for the Falcons (22-5), who will find out their NCAA
Division III Tournament opponent when the tournament field is
announced Monday morning.
Wisconsin Lutheran finishes its 2008-09 season 20-8 overall and
15-3 in the NAC South. The 20 wins tie a school record for most
wins in a single season. The Warriors also tied a school record by
winning nine straight games, which was last set during the 1997-98
season.
