MILWAUKEE - Senior forward Whitney Miller
(Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) poured in a game-high 28
points to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball
team to a 69-54 Northern Athletics Conference win over the Aurora
University Spartans on Tuesday at the Recreation Complex. The
victory put an end to WLC's three-game losing skid.
The Warriors (5-6, 5-1 NAC) jumped out to an 11-4 lead over the
Spartans, who were picked to win the NAC South Division crown.
Their lead was extended to a first-half high 13 points twice
throughout the half before the hosts carried an 11-point advantage
(40-29) into the halftime break. Miller netted half of her points
as the Warriors out-scored Aurora 16-5 in points off turnovers in
the opening half.
Wisconsin Lutheran never saw its lead relinquish below nine
points in the second half as it led by a game-high 18 points
(63-45) with 8:07 left in the game. The Warriors held AU to just
31.3 percent shooting in the half after the visitors shot 54.2
percent in the first half.
Miller finished two points below her career high of 30 points
which she set earlier this season against Alverno on December 2.
Junior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) finished
with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while freshman
Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) added 10 points off the
bench.
WLC shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) for the game and edged out the
Spartans on the boards, 36-35.
Becky Gifford topped the Spartans' scoring with 19 points, while
Brianna Leland contributed 10 points. AU finished the game shooting
41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the field.
Wisconsin Lutheran will next travel to Dominican University in
River Forest, Ill., on Thursday for a 7 p.m. NAC tip-off with the
Stars.
