RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Wisconsin Lutheran College
shot a season-high 52.5 percent from the floor and had four players
reach double figures as the Warriors women's basketball team
defeated the Dominican University Stars 81-57 on Thursday in a
Northern Athletics Conference South Division game at the Igini
Sports Forum.
Dominican opened the game by sinking one of its seven
three-point field goals, but its edge was brief as it was the only
lead the Stars would have all evening .The Warriors scored the next
seven points and opened up a 27-10 advantage with 7:21 left in the
first half. WLC, which shot 48.5 percent from the floor in the
half, extended its lead to 19 points (38-19) at halftime.
Senior Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
and sophomore Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran),
who each finished with 16 points in the contest, scored 13 and 11
points, respectively, in the opening half. Dominican struggled from
the floor, shooting just 24.1 percent in the period.
The Warriors maintained their 19-point lead (50-31) until the
15:04 mark of the second half before DU went on an 11-2 run to cut
the Warriors' lead back down to 10 points, 52-42. WLC ended the run
by scoring five straight points to build a 15-point lead with 9:30
left and never looked back. The visitors extended their lead to a
game-high 24 points before the final buzzer sounded. WLC, which
owned a 10-0 margin in second-chance points, shot a sizzling 57.1
percent in the second half.
Freshman guard Alyssa Allister (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran) led all scorers with a game- and career-best 17 points on
5-for-9 shooting from downtown. Fellow freshman guard Shavon Dillon
(Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) also joined Miller and Johnson with
16 points, including 13 that came in the second half. Johnson also
pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double.
The Warriors put forth their best shooting display of the
season, finishing 32-for-61 from the field, including 8-for-18 from
three-point range. WLC dominated the rebounding totals, doubling-up
the Stars on the glass, 48-24.
Angel Betts and Sarah Budz scored 11 and 10 points,
respectively, to pace the Stars (7-7, 3-5 NAC), who shot 36.8
percent (21-for-57) from the floor for the game. The conference's
leading three-point shooting team shot 35 percent (7-for-20) from
beyond the arc.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-6, 6-1 NAC), which seeks its third
straight win, concludes its busy week by hosting NAC North Division
leader Concordia University Wisconsin (8-6, 7-1 NAC) on Saturday at
5 p.m. at the Recreation Complex.
