MILWAUKEE - The Warriors women's basketball
team was defeated by the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons
62-56 in a battle of the conference's two division leaders on
Saturday evening at the Recreation Complex.
Wisconsin Lutheran struggled from the field early on, missing
its first eight shot attempts as the Falcons grabbed a 7-0 lead at
the 17:26 mark of the first half. CUW had a lead of as much as nine
points (18-9), but WLC, which shot 50 percent from the floor after
opening the game missing its first eight, trailed by just one point
(24-23) at halftime.
The Warriors shot 35.7 percent in the half, while the Concordia
connected on 32.3 percent of its shots. The two squads combined for
22 first-half turnovers.
Wisconsin Lutheran' Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) scored the first bucket of the second half to give the
Warriors their only lead of the game, 25-24. WLC trailed by only
two points, 32-30, with 12:17 left before CUW scored five straight
to take a seven-point advantage. The North Division leaders
extended their lead to a game-high 11 points (50-39) with 4:12
remaining on the clock when WLC began to close the gap. The hosts
answered with a 14-5 run and found themselves down by just two
points, 55-53, at the 1:27 mark. However, CUW nailed a jumper and a
pair of free throws to take a six-point lead that it would never
relinquish.
WLC's second-half comeback was sparked by six three-point field
goals. Just 15 combined turnovers were committed in the final
period.
Senior forward Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) and Johnson each scored a game-high 15 points to pace the
Warriors. Freshman Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School)
finished with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and four
steals in her first career start. Miller also corralled a team-best
seven rebounds.
The Warriors and Falcons shot a similar 35.6 and 35.9 percent
for the game, respectively. The difference came on the glass where
CUW held a 51-34 advantage in rebounds over WLC, which led to a
14-6 margin in second-chance points in favor of Concordia.
Concordia Wisconsin (9-6, 8-1 NAC) got scoring contributions
from eight of its 11 players that saw action in the contest and was
led by Kendall Kearns' 11 points off the bench. Meghan Matthies
scored 10 points and Pearl Wallace grabbed a game-high 12
rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-7, 6-2 NAC) remains home on Wednesday when
it hosts fellow NAC South Division foe Benedictine University at 7
p.m. at the Recreation Complex.
