MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College shot a
season-best 54.0 percent and had five players reach double figures
for the first time this season as the Warriors defeated the
Benedictine University Eagles 73-70 in a Northern Athletics
Conference South Division game Wednesday night at the Recreation
Complex.
The Warriors and Eagles traded leads seven times and tied the
contest at three different occasions throughout a tight first half
of action. WLC, which shot 52.0 percent from the floor in the half,
led by a game-high seven points (26-19) with 5:19 left before
carrying a 33-29 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Senior forward Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran), who poured in 14 points in the first half, entered the
game just one point shy of becoming the 12th player in WLC women's
basketball history to reach 1,000 career points. She eclipsed the
feat when she knocked down a jumper in the middle of the paint at
the 16:05 mark of the opening half.
Wisconsin Lutheran matched its game-high lead of seven points,
41-34, with 2:21 gone by in the second half. BU responded with an
8-0 run to take a one-point lead at the 15:07 mark. WLC was able to
hold onto its lead until 8:42 remaining when Benedictine jumped in
front again, 54-53. A lay-up by Jenna Neuberger (Muskego,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) on the Warriors' ensuing possession gave
WLC a lead that it wouldn't surrender.
The Warriors shot 56.0 percent in the second half and had a pair
of freshmen, Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) and Krissy
Day (West Allis, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), reach double figures in
the half.
Miller led WLC with 18 points in the game. Dillon and Day
finished with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Rachel Johnson
(Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Alyssa Allister (Lake
Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) each added 11 points. Miller grabbed
a game-high eight rebounds, while Johnson dished out a game-high
seven assists.
The host Warriors shot a season-best 54.0 percent (27-for-50)
from the floor in the game despite turning the ball over 11 more
times (23-12) than the Eagles. Both teams were knotted at 37
rebounds apiece, but Benedictine owned a 19-10 advantage over WLC
on the offensive glass.
Jenn Bren scored a game-high 21 points to lead three players in
double figures for Benedictine (5-9, 3-6 NAC), which attempted 25
more shots (29-for-75) than the Warriors in the contest to finish
at 38.7 percent.
Wisconsin Lutheran (7-7, 7-2 NAC) travels to Maranatha Baptist
Bible College in Watertown, Wis., on Saturday for a 5 p.m. tip-off
with the Crusaders.
