MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College overcame
a sluggish first half by shooting 54.5 percent in the second half
to defeat cross-town rival Milwaukee School of Engineering 65-56 on
Tuesday night in a Northern Athletics Conference game at the
Recreation Complex.
The Warriors fell behind early, finding themselves in a 10-2
hole at the 14:42 mark of the opening half. WLC came back to tie
the game at 10 apiece, only to see the Raiders build their lead
back up to seven points, 20-13, with 5:17 left to play. WLC closed
out the half on an 11-3 run to take a 24-23 lead into halftime.
Wisconsin Lutheran shot 37.0 percent in the first half, compared
to 26.5 percent shooting for MSOE.
WLC, which shot 54.5 percent in the second half, never
relinquished its first-half lead. The Warriors extended their
margin to a game-high 13 points three different times in the half.
Senior Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
scored 18 of her game-high 24 points in the second period for WLC,
which shot 16-for-19 from the charity stripe in the half.
Miller was joined in double figures by freshman guard Shavon
Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School), who scored 15 points.
Sophomore Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added
a team-high nine rebounds and five assists.
The Warriors shot 44.9 percent (22-for-49) from the field for
the game, while holding the Raiders to just 28.4 percent
(19-for-67) shooting. MSOE edged WLC on the glass, 41-40, and owned
a 15-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. However, the Warriors shot
a stellar 79.2 percent (19-for-24) from the free-throw line.
Jackie Bertram registered a team-high 16 points to lead three
players in double figures for MSOE (7-10, 5-6 NAC). Carol Cayo
added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (9-7, 9-2 NAC) continues its three-game week
on Thursday when it travels to cross-town rival Alverno College
(8-8, 6-4 NAC) for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Reiman Gymnasium. The
Warriors defeated the Inferno 88-85 in double overtime in their
first meeting of the season on December 2 at the Recreation
Complex.
