MILWAUKEE - After leading by three points at
halftime, Wisconsin Lutheran College shot 14 percent and made just
four field goals in the second half as the Alverno College Inferno
defeated the Warriors 64-46 on Thursday at the Reiman Gymnasium in
a battle between the top two teams in the Northern Athletics
Conference South Division.
The Warriors jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage and held a
lead until the 14:58 mark when Alverno took its first lead of the
game, 10-9. Following three ties, the Inferno went up by six
points, 25-19, with 6:19 left to play. Wisconsin Lutheran ended the
first half on a 7-2 run to acquire a 32-29 halftime lead.
WLC, which committed just four turnovers in the opening period,
shot 36.8 percent from the floor. Meanwhile, Alverno shot 38.2
percent from the field. The two squads combined for only four team
fouls in the half.
AC opened the second half by scoring 10 straight points to jump
in front 39-32. WLC would get within three points, 43-30, with
14:55 remaining on the clock. However, the Inferno extended on
their three-point margin to lead by 10 points or more for the final
10:01 of the game. The Warriors were held without a field goal for
the last 11:23 of the second half.
Wisconsin Lutheran went just 4-for-28 from the floor in the
second half for 14.3 percent, while Alverno countered by shooting
51.9 percent. The Warriors turned the ball over 14 times in the
second half, leading to 18 points for the Inferno.
Junior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) scored 12
points to pace the Warriors, while also grabbing nine rebounds.
Senior Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
was the only other Warrior to reach double digits with 10 points.
Sophomore Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Warriors finished the game shooting 27.3 percent
(18-for-66), whereas Alverno shot 44.3 percent (27-for-61). Despite
being out-rebounded 44-41 by AC, WLC did own a 17-11 margin on the
offensive glass.
Shataya McComb poured in 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to
lead the Inferno (9-8, 7-4 NAC), who won their sixth straight game.
Gabby Allen and Rachel Diedrich added 15 and 14 points,
respectively.
Wisconsin Lutheran (9-8, 9-3 NAC) hosts Lakeland College on
Saturday as part of its annual Winterfest celebration. The game,
which begins at 1 p.m. at the Recreation Complex, precedes the 3:15
p.m. men's contest.
