MILWAUKEE - The WLC
women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 59-58 overtime
loss in a key cross-conference matchup with the Lakeland College
Muskies Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Complex.
The Warriors led or were tied for all but one minute in the
opening half. WLC found itself up by as much as six with 11:26 to
go in the first half. The Warriors then fell in to a bit of a
slump, but still led by one point at the break, 25-24.
Wisconsin Lutheran shot 41.7 percent in the first half compared
to Lakeland's 30.3, but the Warriors turned the ball over 13 times
compared to four.
After the break the Warriors found themselves trailing most of
the second half. WLC trailed by as many as eight with six minutes
left With 24 seconds left, WLC sophomore Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) made a layup off a pass from junior Erika
Laete (Spokane, Wash./ Evergreen Lutheran) to tie the score at 50
and force overtime.
In the overtime period, the Muskies outlasted the Warriors.
Lakeland made only three of nine shots taken from beyond the arch
in the game, but two of them came in the middle of the overtime
period. Those two baskets, along with a free throw with a 1:27
left, proved to be enough for the Muskies.
The Warriors had one last shot at the buzzer but senior Whitney
Miller's (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) shot was off
the mark.
The Warriors were led by Miller, who had 17 points and 12
rebounds, 11 on defense. Laete and freshman Shavon Dillon
(Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) added 12 points, eight boards and 11
points, five boards, respectively. Johnson added eight points and
11 rebounds.
Lakeland out lasted the Warriors despite only shooting 29.2
percent for the game. The Muskies got to the free-throw line 27
times, 15 more than the Warriors. Both teams shot an identical 66.7
percent from the charity stripe. WLC as a team shot 39.0 percent in
the game, 28.6 percent from the three-point line. Turnovers and
points off of turnovers proved to be the deciding factor against
the Warriors.
The Warriors (9-9, 9-4 NAC) take the floor again when they
travel to take on Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday,
February 3, for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Warriors defeated the
Cougars, 62-57, at home December 15.
