MADISON, Wis. - The Edgewood College Eagles
used a 19-4 run in the second half to erase an eight-point halftime
deficit and defeat Wisconsin Lutheran 60-56 on Saturday afternoon,
handing the Warriors their eighth straight loss at the Todd Wehr
Edgedome.
Despite four lead changes and three ties, WLC led throughout
most of the first half, leading by as many as 10 points before
carrying an eight-point lead (31-23) into the locker room at
halftime. Junior forward Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen
Lutheran) scored 13 of her game-high 18 points in the half for
Wisconsin Lutheran, which shot 35.3 percent (12-for-34) from the
floor in the half.
The Warriors, who held onto their lead for over the first eight
minutes of the second half, were plagued by 14 turnovers in the
second period, opposed to just seven for Edgewood. With the
Warriors maintaining a 39-37 lead with 11:20 remaining, the Eagles
surged on a 19-4 run to take a 56-43 lead with 5:43 left on the
clock. Freshman guard Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School)
sparked an 11-0 WLC run by scoring nine points to cut the deficit
back down to two points (56-54) with 1:25 left. However, the
Warriors turned the ball over on consecutive possessions
and were forced to foul as the Eagles sealed the win with free
throws.
Laete recorded her second double-double of the season with game
highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Warriors. Dillon
finished the game with 13 points, while senior Megan Sankey
(Waupun, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) added 11 points on a perfect
3-for-3 from three-point range.
WLC, which finished the game shooting 35.7 percent (20-for-56)
from the floor, edged out the Eagles on the glass, 42-41. However,
Edgewood out-scored the Warriors 17-6 in points off of
turnovers.
The Eagles (5-8, 5-2 NAC), who shot 30.6 percent (19-for-62) for
the game, were led by Emily Decorah who led three players in double
figures with 16 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-6, 4-1 NAC) returns to action on Tuesday
when it hosts Aurora University in a 7 p.m. tip-off at the
Recreation Complex. The game is the first of three next week for
the Warriors.
