AURORA, Ill. - The Aurora University Spartans
scored six goals in the second half to break open a 1-1 tie and
defeat Wisconsin Lutheran College 7-1 Wednesday afternoon in a
Northern Athletics Conference men's soccer match at Vago Field.
The Spartans (10-6-1, 8-1 NAC), who out-shot the Warriors 12-3
in the first half, scored the only goal of the opening period at
13:17 when Bobby Gonnella found the back of the net unassisted for
a 1-0 lead that stood until the break.
Twenty-eight seconds into the second half of action, WLC junior
Jeremy Smith (Waukesha, Wis./New Berlin West) evened the score at
1-1 after an assist from fellow junior James Sather (Milwaukee,
Wis./Nathan Hale).
The contest remained knotted at 1-1 for the next 16-plus minutes
before second-place Aurora scored six times during a 23-minute
span. Anthony Amedei, Jim Kelly, Kory Seddon, Gonnella and Nick
Helmer netted goals for the host Spartans.
The Warriors finished with six shots for the game, two each from
juniors Trevor Schwartz (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) and
Nate Waggoner (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran). Senior Chris Lorig
(Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) made seven saves in over 78 minutes
in the net. Freshmen Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) and Brian
Benn (Milwaukee, Wis./Heritage Christian) also saw action in goal
for WLC.
Gonnella finished with a team-high six of Aurora's 27 shots in
the contest. Goalkeeper Ethan Cashan collected three saves.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-14-1, 2-7 NAC) hosts Concordia University
Wisconsin (9-5-3, 5-2-2 NAC) in its final home game of the season
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Warrior Field. The match marks Homecoming
and Senior Day for the Warriors.
