MEQUON, Wis. - In a match featuring two of the
top teams in the Northern Athletics Conference, Wisconsin Lutheran
suffered a tough five-set heartbreaking loss to Concordia
University Wisconsin Saturday afternoon at the John Buuck Field
House.
The Warriors came out strong in the opening set, never trailing
on their way to winning 25-19. The Falcons evened the match in the
second set with a 25-20 victory. Trailing 19-12, WLC came within
one point, 21-20, but CUW scored the final four points to close out
the set. The hosts ran away with the victory in set three, 25-10.
Wisconsin Lutheran trailed just 10-9 but Concordia Wisconsin used a
15-1 run to win the set. CUW and WLC went back-and-forth in the
fourth set, trading leads numerous times before the Warriors were
able to pull out a 29-27 victory. The Warriors found themselves
down early (3-0) in the fifth decisive set, but managed to come
back and grab a 9-6 lead. With the score knotted at 14-14, the
Falcons scored the final two points of the set to win the match,
16-14.
Senior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) collected
a career and match-high 22 kills to lead two others who reached
double-digit kills. Juniors Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) (18 kills/12 digs), Jenna Neuberger
(Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) (12 kills/11 digs) and Leanna
Miller (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) (22 assists/12 digs) each
recorded double-doubles for the Warriors. Freshman Mariah Bukiewicz
(Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had a match-best 24 assists for WLC.
Freshmen Kayla Ridgeman (Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) (29)
and Erin Greenfield (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) (16) also
reached double-digit dig totals.
Lydia Meaden and Stephanie Boehm finished with 16 kills each for
the Falcons (20-6, 10-1 NAC), who had three players record
double-doubles. Tasha Strey had 12 assists and Kelsey Lorenzen led
the way with 26 digs.
Wisconsin Lutheran (18-10, 8-3 NAC) hosts Dominican University
(20-7, 9-2 NAC) for Senior Night Wednesday, October 27 at 7 p.m. at
the Recreation Complex. WLC will honor seniors Laete and Kaitlyn
Wiese (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) in its final regular season home
match.
