MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
defense allowed just 68 total yards of offense on its way to
shutting out Rockford College 19-0 on Homecoming 2010 Saturday
afternoon at Raabe Stadium.
The Rockford offense had no chance against a WLC defense that
has allowed fewer than 10 points in three of its last four games.
Wisconsin Lutheran recorded six sacks, including three by senior
Kaylan Gaines (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage).
The Warriors jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter.
Sophomore Philip Chaltis (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) nailed one of
his two field goals, the first from 42 yards away, on WLC's second
drive of the game. On the Regents' following drive, senior Tom
Bodnar (Racine, Wis./Park) intercepted a David Savayong pass to
give the Warriors possession on the Rockford 26-yard line. Two
plays later, sophomore Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) hit
sophomore Josh Stodola (Denmark, Wis./Denmark) for a 25-yard
touchdown pass. The Warriors led at halftime 13-0.
Wisconsin Lutheran's defense capped the scoring on Rockford's first
drive of the second half. Sophomore Jason Kramer (Oconomowoc,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) intercepted Savayong's pass and returned
it 26 yards for a touchdown. The Warriors allowed just two first
downs for the rest of the game on their way to their third
conference victory.
Shaw was 11-for-26 for 152 yards and a touchdown. Stodola led
the receiving corps with three catches for 51 yards and a score.
Senior Larry Hairl (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) rushed for 50 yards on
17 carries. Senior Shem Biebert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St.
Croix Lutheran) punted seven times for an average of 36 yards per
punt. He pinned RC inside its 20-yard line twice and his longest
punt flew for 55 yards.
Senior Josh McCormick (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) led
the defense with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Senior Shaun
Stannard (Merton, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) recorded eight tackles,
seven of them solo.
Savayong was 3-10 for 13 yards with two interceptions for
Rockford (0-7, 0-4 NAC). Jason Hosey gained 57 yards on 26 carries.
Josh Ross led Rockford's defense with nine tackles.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-2, 3-1 NAC) travels north to Mequon, Wis.,
Saturday, October 30 to face NAC foe Concordia University Wisconsin
(2-5, 2-2 NAC) in the annual Lutheran Bowl. The battle for the
Luther Cup kicks-off at 1 p.m. at Century Stadium.
