ST. PAUL, Minn. - UW-La Crosse used a strong
second half to defeat Wisconsin Lutheran College Friday night 86-54
at the Robertson Center in the first game of the Perkins Tip-Off
Tournament hosted by Bethel University.
The game went back and forth during most of the first half until
UW-L took a nine-point lead heading into halftime and never looked
back. WLC shot just 37 percent in the first half, compared to 44
percent for the Eagles.
The Eagles started the second half where they left off. They
were able to build a 20 point lead midway through the second half.
UW-L continued its offensive surge to eventually win the game by 32
points, 86-54. The Eagles committed only 10 turnovers for the game,
compared to 23 by the Warriors.
DJ Cupertino (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) provided a spark off the
bench and led the Warriors with 16 points by going 4-for-4 from
behind the arc. Jeremy Murphy (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) was the next
leading scorer with 11, going 5-for-14 from the field. Cupertino
and Murphy were the only Warriors to reach double-digit scoring.
Darnell Williams (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) had a good day
on the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds.
Three players led the way for the Eagles. Al Chery, Tony Mane,
and Cory Degner poured in 18, 16, and 12 for UW-L,
respectively.
For the game, WLC was out-shot by the Eagles, 38 percent to 50
percent. The Warriors held the rebound margin close, only being
out-rebounded, 39-35.
The Warriors will play their final game in the Perkins Tip-Off
Tournament Saturday night as they face off against host Bethel
University. The game is slated for 6 p.m. at the Robertson
Center.
