ST. PAUL, Minn. - Bethel University scored 20
straight points in the first half to pull away from Wisconsin
Lutheran College and win 81-68 on Saturday in the Perkins Tip-Off
Tournament at the Robertson Center.
Sophomore DJ Cupertino (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) pulled Wisconsin
Lutheran within two points, 12-10, midway into the first half, but
the Royals rattled off 20 straight points to take a 41-21 halftime
lead. The Warriors shot just 19.4 percent in the first half
compared to 51.5 percent for Bethel.
Wisconsin Lutheran closed within 12 points at the midway mark of
the second half, but could only climb within eight with under a
minute left in the game. The Warriors outscored Bethel 47-40 in the
second frame.
Freshman Zach Jahns (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and
junior Alex Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) each
recorded double doubles to lead the Warriors. The duo scored 15
points each with Merbach pulling down 15 rebounds. Jahns collected
11 rebounds. Junior Jeremy Murphy (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) also
added 12 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran outrebounded Bethel 46-38 but was outshot
46.7 percent to 29.7 percent for the game.
Taylor Hall poured in a game-best 34 points for Bethel (1-1),
while Greg Meyer added 13 points off the bench.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-3) travels to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday,
November 24 for a non-conference clash with the Warhawks. The game
tips-off at 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.
