MEQUON, Wis. - Concordia University Wisconsin
shot 51.4 percent from the floor and owned a 22-8 advantage in
points off turnovers on its way to defeating Wisconsin Lutheran
College 89-62 on Tuesday in the Warriors' Northern Athletics
Conference opener at the John Buuck Field House.
Alex Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) scored the
first basket of the game, but unfortunately it was the only lead
the Warriors had on the night. The Falcons scored the next 11
points for a nine-point advantage at the 13:40 mark. CUW built a
14-point lead before WLC closed within six points, 22-16, with 7:27
left in the half. However, the hosts were able to extend their lead
up to 15 points, 35-20, at the break.
Wisconsin Lutheran shot just 28.6 percent in the first half,
compared to 51.7 percent for Concordia Wisconsin. Despite turning
the ball over more than the Warriors (12-11), the Falcons owned a
14-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
CUW maintained its double-digit margin for the entire second
half, leading by 20 points with 15:48 left in the game. The
Warriors trimmed their deficit to 12 points at the 9:02 mark but
were not able to get any closer. A 10-2 Falcons run extended their
lead to a game-high 28 points with 2:30 remaining on the clock.
Merbach paced Wisconsin Lutheran with a game-high 21 points.
Jeremy Murphy (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) and Zach Jahns (Jackson,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) also reached double figures by adding
13 and 10 points, respectively.
Russell Strutz (Sturtevant, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) and Darnell
Williams (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) grabbed a team-best
six rebounds each.
Luke Doedens and Edward Newton-Kemp scored 18 points apiece to
lead five players in double figures for the Falcons (4-1, 2-0 NAC).
Cory Stark added a double-double with 16 points and 11
rebounds.
CUW shot 51.4 percent for the game, while WLC connected on 38.2
percent of its shots.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-5, 0-1 NAC) returns to action next Monday,
December 6 hosting Lawrence University in a 7 p.m. non-conference
game at the Recreation Complex.
