MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran scored the first
10 points of the game and led by as many as 22 points in the first
half before holding off the Alverno College Inferno 69-54 on
Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Conference game at the
Reiman Gymnasium.
The Warriors opened the game by scoring the first 10 points with
just 3:28 coming off the clock. WLC extended its leading margin to
22 points with just under two minutes left, before carrying a 39-18
advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Erika
Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) scored 12 and 10 points,
respectively, in the opening period for the Warriors. WLC shot 46.4
percent in the half, while holding the Inferno to just 18.2
percent.
WLC held a 21-points lead, 45-24, at the 13:50 mark of the
second half before Alverno closed within 14 points just over two
minutes later. The Inferno continued to chip away, trimming their
deficit to just eight points, 58-50, with 1:43 remaining. However,
the Warriors ended the game on an 11-4 run to hold off the
upset-minded Inferno.
The Warriors shot 38.1 percent in the second period, compared to
a much-improved 43.3 percent for Alverno.
Laete finished with game highs of 19 points and 16 rebounds for
her second straight double-double. Johnson capped her night with 16
points to go along with nine boards. Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee,
Wis./Hope School) and Krissy Day (West Allis, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) added 10 points each. WLC shot a stellar 80.8 percent
(21-for-26) from the charity stripe.
The Warriors out-rebounded the Inferno 43-28, and out-shot the
hosts 42.9 percent to 32.7 percent.
Kayla Kennedy and Alicia Kontowski scored 11 points each to lead
the Inferno (1-5, 0-2 NAC).
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-0, 1-0 NAC), which tied its best ever
start to a season, returns to action next Tuesday, December 7
hosting Lakeland College at the Recreation Complex. Tip time is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
