ROCKFORD, Ill. - Wisconsin Lutheran College
held off the Rockford College Regents 73-70 to record their first
victory of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Seaver
Center.
The Regents sprang out to an early 10-0 lead four minutes into
the first half. The Warriors fought their way back into the game
and with five minutes to go, they took their first lead of the
game. WLC took a five-point lead, 36-31, going into halftime. The
Warriors shot 34 percent from the field but made 13 of their 20
free throw attempts. The Regents shot 44 percent from the
field.
The Warriors maintained the lead in the second half and twice
built it up to 10 points. The Regents kept the game close, coming
within three points of the lead six times in the final minute,
eventually falling by three points, 70-73. Both teams shot 46
percent from the field in the second half.
WLC had five players in double digits. Alex Merbach (Kaukauna,
Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) was the leading scorer off the bench for
the Warriors with 19 points. Russell Strutz (Sturtevant,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) finished with 13 points. DJ Cupertino
(Wauwatosa, Wis./East) and Jeremy Murphy (Chicago, Ill./Clemente)
each poured in 12, while Zach Jahns (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) scored 11 points for the Warriors. Darnell Williams
(Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) finished with a game-high 13
rebounds as WLC out-rebounded the Regents, 43-32.
A trio of players led RC (5-4, 3-1 NAC) offensively. Taylor
Stinson scored a game-high 22 points for the Regents. Robert Malone
and Tory Minnifield scored 18 and 14 points, respectively.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-7, 1-2, NAC) will return to the hardwood
Saturday, December 18 against Silver Lake College. The game is
slated to begin at 3 p.m. at the UW-Manitowoc Fieldhouse in
Manitowoc, Wis.
