MILWAUKEE - Despite shooting 30 percent in the
first half and committing 31 turnovers for the game, Wisconsin
Lutheran was able to find a way to defeat the Lakeland College
Muskies by a final score of 58-48 on Tuesday in a Northern
Athletics Conference contest at the Recreation Complex.
With the victory, the Warriors (5-0, 2-0 NAC), who are receiving
votes in the D3hoops.com Week 2 Top 25 Poll, established a record
for the best start in program history.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which never trailed in the contest, limited
Lakeland to scoring just seven points through the first 12 minutes
of action. After leading by 10 points, 17-7, the Muskies climbed
back to within four points, but the Warriors closed out the half on
an 8-0 run to lead 25-13 at halftime.
Both teams struggled from the field in the opening period. WLC
shot just 30.8 percent (8-for-26), but held the Muskies to only
18.8 percent (6-for-32). The Warriors turned the ball over 16
times, while Lakeland committed 11 miscues in the half.
The Warriors maintained their double-digit advantage for the
first 14-plus minutes of the second half, including a game-high
17-point lead, 35-18, at the 15:17 mark. However, the Muskies were
able to get back into the game and trailed by just four points
twice with less three minutes left in the game. WLC was able to
connect on its final six free throw attempts to hold off Lakeland
and remain unbeaten on the season.
Each team vastly improved its shooting percentage in the second
half as WLC and LC shot 58.8 and 50 percent from the floor,
respectively.
Junior Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
recorded her second double-double of the season to pace the
Warriors. She scored a team-high 16 points and tied a game-high
with 12 rebounds. Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School)
finished with 13 points, including 11 in the second half. Erika
Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) notched her third
double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Warriors out-rebounded the Muskies 42-25, and concluded the
game shooting 41.9 percent from the field.
Lakeland (4-3, 2-2 NAC) was guided by Mallory Magee's game-high
19 points and eight rebounds. The Muskies shot just 32.1 percent
for the game, including 15 percent from long distance.
Wisconsin Lutheran returns to action on Saturday, December 11
with a NAC road showdown against Rockford College (3-5, 2-2 NAC).
The game between the Warriors and Regents is slated for 2 p.m. at
the Seaver Center in Rockford, Ill.
