LISLE, Ill. - Two free throws by Tracey Walsh
with two seconds left in the game sunk the Warriors as they dropped
their final road game of the regular season at Benedictine
University by a score of 64-62 on Saturday afternoon at the Rice
Center.
Trailing 11-9 early in the game, the Warriors scored 12 straight
points, eight of which were came off the bench by freshman
Brittanny Bahr (Caledonia, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran). Wisconsin
Lutheran held the lead for the rest of the half and led by as many
as 11 points, 29-18, with 3:31 left. WLC went to the locker room
ahead 32-24.
The Warriors shot 30.6 percent from the field but made five
three-pointers as Bahr led the way with eight points. The Eagles
shot 29.2 percent and committed 14 turnovers in the first half.
The second half consisted of six ties and eight lead changes
before the Eagles claimed their first lead, 43-41, since early in
the first half at the 11:55 mark. The Warriors regained the lead
with 8:58 remaining and held it until Benedictine tied the game
62-62 with 1:22 to play. Both teams held each other scoreless until
BU earned a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining when
Walsh sank both of her attempts.
Junior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) and
senior Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
each scored 11 points apiece in the half. Wisconsin Lutheran
improved its shooting (44 percent) in the second half and finished
at 36.1 percent (22-for-61) for the game. The Eagles also improved
by shooting 46.9 percent in the second half, where Walsh also added
11 or her team-high 15 points.
Miller led Wisconsin Lutheran with a game-high 17 points and 12
rebounds. Laete added 12 points and five rebounds. The Warriors
were out-rebounded, 46-40. Wisconsin Lutheran turned the ball over
16 times, compared to 18 for the Eagles.
Walsh led three Eagles (11-10, 9-7 NAC) in double figures with
15 points. Monica Krozel and Jenn Bren each scored 11 and 10
points, respectively. Bren also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Benedictine shot 39.3 percent (22-for-56) from the field and was
just 14.3 percent (2-for-14) from beyond the arc.
Wisconsin Lutheran (12-11, 11-6 NAC) plays its final home
contest of the regular season on Wednesday when it hosts Dominican
University at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Complex. WLC will pay
tribute to seniors Miller, Lindsay Maas (Watertown, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran), Megan Sankey (Waupun, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) and
Rachel Strutz (Sturtevant, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) during a
pregame ceremony.
