MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team scored a convincing 96-61 win over the
Dominican University Stars in its final home game of the regular
season on Wednesday night. The Warriors snapped a two-game losing
streak while clinching their second straight Northern Athletics
Conference South Division title.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which exchanged leads 12 times with
Dominican in the first half, trailed by as many as five points at
the 10:02 mark. The Warriors regained a seven-point lead, 40-33,
with 3:03 left before carrying a 43-38 advantage into the halftime
intermission.
WLC shot 44.7 percent in the first half including 42.9 percent
(6-for-14) from beyond the arc. The Warriors were led in the first
half by Whitney Miller's (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
10 points. Sophomore Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) grabbed six rebounds, while Megan Sankey (Waupun,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) dished out five assists. Sarah Budz poured
in 16 of her game-high 20 points in the opening half for Dominican,
which shot 48.4 percent from the floor.
With the score tied at 45-45 less than 1:30 into the second
half, Wisconsin Lutheran went on an 11-1 run to grab a 10-point
lead. Less than 10 minutes later, the Warriors found themselves in
front by 27 points (84-57) with 5:44 to play. WLC increased its
lead to a game-high 36 points, 96-60, at the 2:05 mark to coast to
its second consecutive South Division crown.
The Warriors shot a torrid 67.7 percent in the second half,
including 50.0 percent (7-for-14) from downtown. Johnson, freshman
Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) and Miller scored 14,
11 and 10 points, respectively, in the half for WLC, which turned
the ball over just three times on its way to a season-low eight
turnovers. The Stars were held to just 29.0 percent shooting in the
half.
Miller concluded the contest with a game-high 20 points to lead
five Warriors in double figures. Dillon, who went 5-for-6 from
downtown, was close behind with a career-high 19 points. Johnson
also tied a career-best with 17 points and a game-high nine
rebounds, while junior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen
Lutheran) and Sankey finished with 12 and 11 points,
respectively.
WLC finished the game shooting 55.1 percent (38-for-69) overall
and 46.4 percent (13-for-28) from three-point land. The Warriors
assisted on all but nine of their shots in the contest and made a
season-high 13 three-point field goals. Wisconsin Lutheran also
out-rebounded the Stars, 41-30.
Dominican (8-16, 4-14 NAC) was led in the game by Budz who
finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Danielle
Miller added 10 points for the Stars, who shot 38.7 percent
(24-for-62) for the game.
The Warriors paid tribute to seniors Miller, Sankey, Lindsay
Maas (Watertown, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Rachel Strutz
(Sturtevant, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) during a pregame
ceremony.
