MEQUON, Wis. - Despite shooting just 33.3
percent from the floor, the WLC women's basketball team was able to
knock off the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons 52-49 on
Saturday afternoon in a NAC North/South Challenge game at the John
Buuck Fieldhouse.
The Warriors (14-11, 12-6 NAC), who never trailed against the
top-seeded Falcons from the NAC's North Division, held the hosts to
just 22.2 percent shooting in the first half. Wisconsin Lutheran
built a 10-point lead, 21-11, with 4:20 left in the half. A
three-pointer by sophomore Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) put WLC up by a half-high 12 points with
just 50 seconds left in the opening half. The Warriors went into
halftime in front 28-18.
Johnson finished the first half leading both teams with eight
points and nine rebounds. While holding Concordia Wisconsin to just
22.2 percent in the first half, Wisconsin Lutheran also struggled,
shooting 29 percent.
Senior Megan Sankey (Waupun, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) opened the
second half by drilling a three-pointer to put the Warriors up by a
game-high 13 points. The Warriors led by 11 points, 44-33, with
7:27 left before CUW went on a 9-0 to close within two points with
five minutes remaining. Senior Whitney Miller (Germantown,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) put WLC up by five at the 2:22 mark
before the Falcons cut it down to two points twice in the last two
minutes. CUW had the final shot of the game with WLC in front by
three points, but it failed to connect from downtown.
Miller scored eight points in the second half to pace WLC, which
shot an improved 39.1 percent from the floor. The Falcons shot 35.5
percent from the floor in the period.
Miller finished with a game-high 15 points and four blocked
shots to lead Wisconsin Lutheran, while Johnson recorded a
double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Warriors shot
33.3 percent (18-for-54) in the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran edged out the Falcons on the boards, 44-43,
and committed six less turnovers (17-11) than CUW.
Pearl Wallace scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead
the Falcons (16-9, 15-2 NAC). Ashleigh Galligan also added 10
points. WLC held CUW to just 29.3 percent (17-for-58) shooting in
the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran will host seventh-seeded Rockford College on
Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a NAC Tournament Quarterfinal game at the
Recreation Complex. The Regents defeated MSOE 62-59 on Saturday to
earn the tournament's seventh seed. WLC defeated Rockford 71-58 in
their only meeting of the season on December 12 at the Recreation
Complex.
