MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team scored a 52-37 victory over the Rockford
College Regents in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 Northern
Athletics Conference Tournament Wednesday night at the Recreation
Complex.
With the win, Wisconsin Lutheran (15-11) advances to the
tournament's semifinal round where it will host third-seeded
Lakeland College on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Complex. The
Muskies (20-6) advanced by defeating Alverno College 67-61 in
overtime on Wednesday. In their only other meeting this season, the
Muskies edged the Warriors 59-58 in overtime at the REX on January
30.
The Warriors jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, however
seventh-seeded Rockford came back to take a 15-12 advantage with
7:59 left on the first-half clock. WLC regained the lead, 18-15,
off a steal and lay-up by freshman Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee,
Wis./Hope School) and two made buckets by senior Whitney Miller
(Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran). The Regents then went
on an 8-0 run of their own to take back the lead, 23-18. Wisconsin
Lutheran was able to cut Rockford's lead to 23-22 at halftime by
holding the visitors without a field goal for the final 4:18 of the
half.
WLC shot 29.0 percent (9-for-31) from the field in the half as
Miller led the way with eight points and freshman Krissy Day (West
Allis, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) had five rebounds. The Regents, who
shot 43.5 percent, received seven points and six rebounds from
junior Megan Lawler.
Wisconsin Lutheran came out stronger in the second half, tying
the game at 29-29 with 11:46 to play. A three-pointer by sophomore
Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) gave WLC a lead
(32-29) that it would never relinquish. With the Warriors in front
36-35 with 7:35 remaining, the hosts used a 14-0 run, holding the
Regents scoreless for 6:20 to put the game away.
Miller again led Wisconsin Lutheran in the second half, scoring
nine points and grabbing five rebounds. After going 4-for-9 from
the charity stripe in the opening period, WLC shot 7-for-8 in the
second half. The Warriors went 10-for-29 from the floor for 34.5
percent, while Rockford was held to just 28.0 percent (7-for-25)
shooting.
WLC was paced by Miller's game-high 17 points and eight
rebounds. Senior Megan Sankey (Waupun, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) was
the only other player in the game to hit double figures with 10
points. Day and junior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen
Lutheran) also corralled eight rebounds.
The Warriors finished the contest by shooting just 31.7 percent
(19-for-60) from the floor, including only 20.0 percent (3-for-15)
from beyond the arc. However, WLC out-rebounded RC, 42-36, and
owned a 22-7 margin in points off turnovers.
Megan Lawler and Melissa Swaziak scored nine points each to lead
Rockford (8-18). Lawler and Britney Curry led the visitors with
eight rebounds apiece. The Regents were held to 35.4 percent
shooting for the game, including just 8.3 percent (1-for-12) from
downtown.
