MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College saw its
2009-10 season come to an end Friday when it fell to the Lakeland
College Muskies 58-47 in the semifinal round of the 2010 Northern
Athletics Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at the
Recreation Complex.
The Muskies took advantage of five turnovers by the Warriors in
the beginning minutes of the game to claim a 9-2 lead at the 17:01
mark. WLC countered with a 12-2 run to take the lead back, 14-11.
Lakeland had an answer of its own, using a 9-0 run for a 20-14
advantage with 7:29 left. The tournament-s third seed led by as
much as eight points before senior Whitney Miller (Germantown,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) closed the half with a jumper to
climb within six points, 29-23, at halftime.
Freshman Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) scored all
seven of her points in the first half to lead Wisconsin Lutheran,
which shot 37.9 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 14
times in the half. Mary Dennewitz and Leah Eisner scored seven
points apiece to pace LC, which shot 38.5 percent and committed 13
mistakes.
The Warriors held the Muskies to scoring only six points during
the first 8:20 of the second half as the hosts jumped in front,
36-35. Almost four minutes later, WLC held a 42-39 lead, tying its
largest of the game. Lakeland responded with a 7-0 run to take what
would be the lead for good. The hosts closed within two points with
4:50 left but could inch no closer.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which concluded the second half by shooting
26.5 percent, committed 10 turnovers, compared to just three for
the Muskies. Junior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran)
scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Warriors
in the half. Freshman Brittanny Bahr (Caledonia, Wis./Shoreland
Lutheran) also added seven points in a reserve role. Eisner and KC
Blahnik each dropped in eight points for the Muskies, who outscored
WLC 12-1 in points off turnovers in the half.
Laete finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks to
guide WLC. Miller, Bahr and Dillon were the next closest, finishing
with seven points each. The Warriors ended with a 31.7 percent
(20-for-63) shooting performance, including only 15 percent
(3-for-20) from downtown. WLC connected on 4-of-6 free throws,
while conversely, Lakeland went to the line 32 times, making good
on 20 attempts. The Warriors did win the rebounding battle,
46-38.
Eisner led Muskies (21-6) in double figures with a game-high 15
points. Blahnik followed with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while
Dennewitz finished with 11. Lakeland concluded the game by shooting
34.6 percent (18-for-52) from the floor. LC will host Benedictine,
which defeated Concordia Wisconsin 53-50 in Friday's other
semifinal, on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the NAC Tournament
Championship.
Wisconsin Lutheran ends its season with a 15-12 overall record,
including a 12-6 mark in the NAC South Division. The Warriors, who
have now won at least 15 games in four straight seasons, say
goodbye to seniors Miller, Lindsay Maas (Watertown, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran), Megan Sankey (Waupun, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) and
Rachel Strutz (Sturtevant, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran).
