RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Senior Whitney Miller
(Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) scored a team-high 17
points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to spark Wisconsin
Lutheran College to a 51-44 victory over Concordia University
Chicago on Wednesday in a Northern Athletics Conference women's
basketball game at the Geiseman Gymnasium.
The Warriors and Cougars played through a back-and-forth first
half of action, exchanging leads 10 times. WLC built a half-high
six-point lead, 11-5, at the 12:57 mark, only to see Concordia
Chicago come back to take a 20-18 lead with 3:11 left. Wisconsin
Lutheran was able to take the lead back, 24-22, at halftime.
In the first half, the Warriors shot 34.8 percent, compared to
29.0 percent for the Cougars.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which shot 47.6 percent in the second
period, led by a game-high nine points, 33-24, just 3:17 into the
half. WLC held onto its lead until 4:59 left in the game, when CUC
took its first lead of the half, 44-42. However, the Warriors were
successful on their next three shot attempts, closing out the game
on a 9-0 run to put an end to their two-game skid.
Joining Miller, who collected her third double-double of the
season, in double digits were senior Megan Sankey (Waupun,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) and sophomore Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), who chipped in with 15 and 11 points,
respectively. Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran)
finished with 10 rebounds. Miller and Sankey each made three
three-pointers in the contest.
The Warriors went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc in the half, while
the Cougars were just 1-for-11 from downtown.
WLC finished the game shooting 40.9 percent (18-for-44),
including 8-for-16 from three-point range. The Warriors
out-rebounded the Cougars, 38-31, but tied a season-high with 27
turnovers.
Marche Smith netted more than half of the Cougars' points on the
night, scoring a game-high 24. The next closest scorer from CUC had
just four points. WLC held Concordia Chicago (8-11, 5-8 NAC) to
just 29.5 percent (18-for-61) shooting for the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran (10-9, 10-4 NAC) continues its five-game road
trip Saturday when it faces the Marian University Sabres in a 2
p.m. NAC contest in Fond du Lac, Wis.
