MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin Lutheran won the
first two sets of its Northern Athletics Conference-opening match
against Edgewood College, but the host Eagles rallied to win the
final three sets over the Warriors on Tuesday at the Todd Wehr
Edgedome.
The Warriors fell behind by as much as six points (10-4) in the
opening set, but fought back to tie the score 16-16 and eventually
went onto win set one, 25-23. In the second set, WLC trailed by
four points (10-6) before storming back to jump in front, 23-16.
Edgewood hung around and was able to pull in front, 26-25, but WLC
withstood the rally to win, 29-27.
Wisconsin Lutheran never led in sets two and three before
falling by scores of 25-22 and 25-13, respectively, forcing a fifth
decisive set. WLC trailed early on in the final set before tying
the score five different times. With WLC in front 13-11, EC managed
to tie the score 15-15 and win the sets final two points to stun
the Warriors, 17-15.
Five Warriors recorded double-doubles on the night, led by
junior Rachel Johnson's (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) 15
kills and 11 assists. Freshman Erin Greenfield (Wauwatosa,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) had 13 kills and 18 digs, while junior
Jenna Neuberger (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added 12 kills
and 19 digs.
Freshman Mariah Bukiewicz (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) passed out
30 assists and dug out 13 EC attacks. Sophomore Brittanny Bahr
(Caledonia, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) matched identical totals of
assists and digs with 18 apiece. Freshman Kayla Ridgeman
(Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) finished with a match-high 45
digs.
Edgewood (2-7, 1-0 NAC), which faced four ranked team in the
first eight matches, was paced by Mallory Palmer's career-best 26
kills and 27 digs. Lindsey Swansby contributed with 48 assists and
26 digs.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-4, 0-1 NAC) continues conference play on
the road Thursday when it travels to Sheboygan, Wis., for a 7 p.m.
showdown against the three-time defending NAC Tournament champion
Lakeland College Muskies (1-7, 1-0 NAC).
