AURORA, Ill. - In a match that was resumed from
last Saturday, September 25, the Aurora University Spartans (8-5,
8-3 NAC) slipped past Wisconsin Lutheran College 5-4 Thursday
evening in the final Northern Athletics Conference dual for both
squads at Washington Middle School.
The Warriors received singles victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No.
6 and a win at No. 1 doubles before falling by a slim 5-4 margin
for the fifth time this season.
Sophomore Kathryn Hendee (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) improved her
mark to 7-4 in the NAC after topping Siri Nelson 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at
No. 1. Freshman Lindsay Gauger (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) had
little trouble getting past Elizabeth Pfaff at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0. At
No. 6, freshman Whitney Stibb (Beaver Dam, Wis./Luther Preparatory)
notched WLC's final singles win by defeating Samanatha Semetis,
3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles play, Hendee and Gauger downed Pfaff and Maureen
Wagner, 8-5, at No. 1. WLC wrapped up doubles action with a pair of
tough losses at No. 2 and No. 3 by scores of 8-5 and 8-4,
respectively.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-12, 4-7 NAC) will compete in the 2010 NAC
Women's Tennis Individual Championship this weekend, October 2-3,
in Madison, Wis. Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. each day at
Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The NAC recently unveiled a new
tournament format to determine its individual and team
champions.
