NEW BERLIN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College women's tennis team topped the Lakeland College Muskies 8-1
on Wednesday in a Northern Athletics Conference dual at the
Princeton Club, marking the sixth match in the past seven days for
the Warriors.
Wisconsin Lutheran won five of six singles matches and swept all
three doubles flights to snap its four-match losing skid.
At No. 1 singles, sophomore Kathryn Hendee (Rockton,
Ill./Hononegah) knocked off Lakeland's Nicole Shavlik 5-7, 6-1,
10-8. Freshman Emily Pearson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Luther
Preparatory) coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jenna Oberthaler at No.
3. Junior Erin Mathiak (Slinger, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran),
playing at No. 4, was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Brittany Myszka.
At No. 5, sophomore Taylor King (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) claimed a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Catie Campion. Fellow
sophomore Tiffani Rohan (Bear Creek, Wis./Clintonville) rounded out
singles action at No. 6 by defeating Alyssa Christensen in
convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-0.
WLC's No. 1 doubles tandem of Hendee and Lindsay Gauger
(Rockford, Mich./Rockford) was victorious over Shavlik and April
Schmitz, 8-1. Pearson and King teamed up to shutout Oberthaler and
Myszka, 8-0 at No. 2, while Mathiak and Rohan concluded play at No.
3 with an 8-1 win over Campion and Meribeth Mazzi.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-4, 2-1 NAC) returns to the courts Saturday
for a pair of NAC road contests. The Warriors square off against
Rockford College at 11 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. showdown against
two-time conference champion Edgewood College.
