Free throws cost Warriors in close loss at Concordia Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - A potential game-winning three-point attempt by Krissy Day (West Allis, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) came up just short as time expired as the Concordia University Chicago Cougars defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College 73-72 on Saturday at the Geiseman Gymnasium.

The Warriors trailed by a game-high 10 points, 53-43, with 11:53 remaining in the second half before tying the game at 69-69 at the 3:07 mark. CUC scored the next four points before WLC cut its deficit back down to one point, 73-72, with nine seconds left to play. Following a missed free throw shot by CUC's Marche Smith with eight second left, Day's three-point attempt came up just short as the clock hit zeros.

Freshman Rachel Hoft (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) scored 16 of her career and team-high 21 points off the bench in the second half for the Warriors, who shot 37.9 percent (11-for-29) in the half. WLC never held the lead in the second half. After shooting 56.5 percent (13-for-23) in the first half, the Cougars shot 41.4 percent (12-for-29) in the second.

The Warriors held a slim lead for the first 7:31 of the game and exchanged leads 11 times with the Cougars through the rest of the half/ The Warriors had their largest lead of four points in the half, but went into the locker room at halftime trailing by four, 40-36.

Senior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) followed with 20 points, while junior Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds. Wisconsin Lutheran, which out-rebounded CUC 39-34, went just 17-for-30 (56.7 percent) from the free throw line in the game.

WLC shot 41.4 percent (24-for-58) from the floor for the game, while Concordia Chicago shot 48.1 percent (25-for-52).

Smith finished with a game-high 26 points for the Cougars (7-7, 4-5 NAC). Bobbie May and Katie Leitermann added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Wisconsin Lutheran (11-3, 6-2 NAC) returns to action on Wednesday, January 19 when it takes on Edgewood College (10-5, 8-1 NAC) at 7 p.m. at the Todd Wehr Edgedome in Madison, Wis.
