Turnovers sting WLC in loss to division-leading CUW

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team suffered an 82-65 loss to the Northern Athletics Conference North Division-leading Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on Wednesday night at the Recreation Complex.

The visiting Falcons scored the first points of the game and never looked back. Concordia Wisconsin jumped out to an early 18-5 lead with 15:05 remaining in the first half. The Warriors cut the lead down to just four points, 20-16, on a layup from Russell Strutz (Sturtevant, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran). The Falcons went on a 16-8 run and tripled their lead with 4:57 remaining in the opening half. Wisconsin Lutheran, which committed 17 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, found themselves down by 15 points at the break, 46-31.

Concordia Wisconsin scored 19 of its points off of Warriors turnovers. The Falcons shot 45.5 percent (15-for-33) in the first half, compared to 29.6 percent (8-for-27) for WLC. Wisconsin Lutheran out-rebounded Concordia Wisconsin 23-15 in the opening half. Sophomore Tim Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) led the Warriors in the first half with 10 points.

The second half started much like the first. The Falcons came out fast again and built a game-high 22-point lead with 13:38 remaining in the game. The Warriors closed to within 13 after a three-pointer by Demuth with 4:33 remaining, but would get no closer.

Junior forward Alex Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led the Warriors with his fourth double-double of the season by recording 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Sophomore DJ Cupertino (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) added 10 points and seven rebounds. Demuth finished with 13 points.

WLC out-rebounded CUW, 46-34, but committed a season-high 32 turnovers which led to a 35-14 Falcons advantage in points off turnovers. CUW turned the ball over 18 times. The Warriors shot 36.8 percent (21-for-57) for the game.

Concordia Wisconsin (16-2, 12-0 NAC) had four players reach double figures for the game. Edward Newton-Kemp and Cory Stark each scored 16 points. Mitchell Schneider and Luke Doedens added 14 and 10 points, respectively. For the game, the Falcons shot 42.9 percent (27-for-63) from the field.

Wisconsin Lutheran (3-14, 2-7 NAC) travels to take on the Aurora University Spartans (10-8, 5-5 NAC) on Saturday afternoon in Aurora, Ill. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at Thornton Gymnasium.
