Warriors shoot into records books after big win over Spartans

AURORA, Ill. - Wisconsin Lutheran College sank a school-record 19 three-point field goals on Saturday afternoon en route to an 87-63 Northern Athletics Conference victory over Aurora University at the Thornton Gymnasium.

The Warriors and Spartans exchanged buckets for the first 2:45 to begin the game before Wisconsin Lutheran took the lead for good at the 16:52 mark. WLC went on a 9-0 run to lead 18-10, before surging out to a half-high 22-point lead, 50-28, as the first half horn sounded.

Wisconsin Lutheran shot 56.5 percent (13-for-23) in the first half from beyond the arc. Overall, WLC went 17-for-36 from the floor for 47.2 percent in the half. Freshman Rachel Hoft (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) scored 13 points to lead the Warriors in the period. Sophomores Alyssa Allister (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Brittanny Bahr (Caledonia, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) added 12 and nine points, all on three-pointers, in the half. AU shot 42.9 percent (9-for-21) in the half.

WLC began the second half on a 25-5 run and built its largest lead of the game, 44 points, 80-36, with 8:20 left in the game. WLC narrowly out-shot the Spartans 43 percent (13-for-30) compared to 42 percent (13-for-31).

Allister paced Wisconsin Lutheran with a game and career-high 21 points on 7-for-12 from three-point range. Hoft and Bahr combined for eight three-pointers and each contributed 15 points. Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) tied a game high with eight rebounds.

The Warriors out-rebounded the Spartans 41-29, including 18 offensive rebounds. WLC forced the Spartans into 31 turnovers and owned a 40-22 advantage in points off turnovers.

WLC and AU combined to make 28 three-pointers in the contest, which set a new NCAA Division III record for combined three-pointers made in a game.

Jessica Mason and Michelle Perry scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the Aurora (5-14, 2-10 NAC), which shot 42.3 percent (22-for-52) from the field for the game.

Wisconsin Lutheran (16-3, 11-2 NAC) returns to action on Wednesday, February 2 when it travels to Sheboygan, Wis., to take on the Lakeland College Muskies (8-10, 5-7 NAC). Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
